The Scarlet Empress had 11 children who are each either the patriarch or matriarch of a noble house, the Great Houses. Each house has a Dragonmark which is common among members of the family. Roughly 9 of 10 family members express a Dragonmark of some kind (the remaining 1 of 10 are frequently either disowned or hidden from society). Roughly 9 of 10 family members who express a Dragonmark express the common Dragonmark of the family.

Throne contenders

Some of the houses are directly contending for the Scarlet Throne.

House Mnemon

Common Dragonmark: Mark of Sentinel

Many members of house Mnemon are provincial governors. House Mnemon lacks many military leaders, but Mnemon herself is unquestionably the most powerful human spellcaster in the world who is not a champion of one of the seven Celestial Incarnae (the Unconquered Sun, Luna, and the Maidens of Destiny).

House Peleps

Common Dragonmark: Mark of Finding

House Peleps are often considered "better-equipped pirates". While they desire the Scarlet Throne, they have little land-based military might. House Peleps does, however, have near-total control of the Imperial Navy, and has been making the small islands off the coast of the Blessed Isle their exclusive dominion.

House Tepet

Common Dragonmark: Mark of Passage

House Tepet desperately wants to take the throne, but most of the legions they control were wiped out in a conflict against the Bull of the North, a champion of the Unconquered Sun who has built a barbarian army. Tepet Fokuf is serving as the regent in the Scarlet Empress's absence, but most members of the house consider him to be a bit of an embarrassment. Taunting Tepet soldiers by invoking Fokuf's name is an easy way to send them into a rage.

House V'neef

Common Dragonmark: Mark of Making

V'neef runs the Realm's merchant marine defense force. They are also known for their winemaking, and are willing to throw their military might behind suppressing local governments who would use land for peasant vineyards.

Throne supporters

Other houses would prefer to support another house and be the power behind the throne, rather than ruling directly themselves.

House Cathak

Common Dragonmark: Mark of Handling

Cathak possesses the military might to put someone on the throne and keep them there.

House Sesus

Common Dragonmark: Mark of Handling

Sesus wants dominion over the southeastern portion of the Blessed Isle rather than the throne. Sesus legions never pay for food or other supplies they need, instead taking them from local governments by force.

House Ledaal

Common Dragonmark: Mark of Passage

Ledaal wants control of the southern portion of the Blessed Isle and the land bordering the Inner Sea to the south. Ledaal's legions are prepared to attack any new Emperor or Empress who does not grant them control of these lands. They are also staunch adherents of the immaculate philosophy.

House Ragara

Common Dragonmark: Mark of Sentinel

Ragara does not wish the throne for themselves. They do, however, want whoever takes the throne–along with everyone else–to be deep in debt to their banks and loan agencies.

House Nellens

Common Dragonmark: None; members of the Nellens family have an approximately equal distribution of Dragonmarks

The house has a history of being an incendiary voice in the Deliberative, calling for better treatment of members of the Great Houses who do not express a Dragonmark. They have highly diversified business interests, and they frustrate House Ragara by being incredibly difficult to drive into debt.

House Cynis

Common Dragonmark: Mark of Making

Cynis has no particular allies among the other houses, and as such has no real chance at taking the throne. They are known for their involvement in the drug, prostitution, and slave trades.

Disgraced House Islesi

Common Dragonmark: Mark of Finding

In Realm Year 303, several members of the house attempted to assassinate the Scarlet Empress. The entire house was placed under suspicion for their failure to discover and stop the conspiracy, and then in RY 603 the Empress struck their names from the Imperial ledgers and confiscated all of their lands and seats in the Deliberative. Many members of Iselsi find positions within the All-Seeing Imperial Eye. The Iselsi care more about the survival of the Realm than about who sits on the throne. But more than that, they want Iselsi itself to survive, and ideally they would love to see the family return to its former position in the Realm government.
