Halaster Blackcloak was a notorious wizard who was an expert with portals, born a millennia ago. History does not record exactly where he came from or when he was born, but it is suspected that he was older than Elminster, and he is rumored to have died in 1375 DR.
Before the construction of Waterdeep, Halaster built a wizard's tower on the site where the Yawning Portal tavern now stands. He dug into Mount Waterdeep where he constructed his lair, the Undermountain.
In Skullport, Halaster maintains some kind of cordial relationship with an old mage named Tasselgryn Velldarn, proprietor of The Poisoned Quill.
