The spell protects the target's soul by enveloping the target in an ethereal vault (visible to creatures who can see into the ethereal plane, such as those with true sight or under the effect of etherealness). The target adds 2d4 to all saving throws against spells and effects that would trap or redirect its soul (such as magic jar, or a demilich's Trap Soul) and effects that would transform the target into an undead creature (note that this does not prevent a creature from being reduced to 0 hit points, such as by finger of death, but does prevent it from rising as a zombie). If the effect does not normally have a saving throw, the protected creature gets a Charisma save to prevent the effect, with the 2d4 bonus.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th or 6th level, the duration increases to 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 7th or 8th level, the duration increases to 10 days. When you use a spell slot of 9th level, the duration increases to 1 year.
