This page details the character creation rules for the Skull & Shackles campaign.
Sources
No Critical Role/Wildmount content will be included in this campaign. That includes classes like Blood Hunter, subclasses like Echo Knight, spells like gift of alacrity, ruidium items, etc. All other first-party sources are available, and will be shared through the D&D Beyond campaign.
In addition to normal sources, player options from Xanathar's Lost Notes to Everything Else and Tasha's Crucible of Everything Else will also be available. You can see the relevant materials on this wiki: Xanathar's Lost Notes to Everything Else and Tasha's Crucible of Everything Else.
Finally, a number of Pathfinder 1e spells have been converted to 5e for the purpose of use in this campaign. See category:Converted pathfinder spells for a list of the spells available.
Race
All races are allowed without restriction. Where applicable, you must use a Monsters of the Multiverse version of the race over its legacy counterpart.
Level and multiclassing
At character creation for the beginning of this campaign, player characters will be level 1.
Multiclassing is permitted without restriction (beyond standard multiclassing rules).
Beyond 1st level
This campaign will be using milestone XP. Leveling up will occur between sessions, even if you pass a milestone that would level you up in the middle of a session. When you level up, you'll benefit from the new level immediately at the start of the next session (even if the previous session was forced to end in the middle of a combat), although if you need to do things like take a long rest in order to prepare new spells, you will not have gotten that benefit automatically and you'll need to rest.
Ability scores
Use point buy or standard array (your choice) to assign your ability scores.
Character details
Alignment
Any alignments are acceptable, but you must create a character capable of working with the party.
Encumbrance
We will be using standard encumbrance. Coin weight will be included. (50 coins of any value = 1 pound.)
Backgrounds
All backgrounds and background features are allowed (including the Dragonlance backgrounds, even though their associated feats have a prerequisite of being in a Dragonlance campaign), although you are encouraged to create a custom background to fit your character over setting-specific backgrounds such as Strixhaven student backgrounds.
Bonus feats
If you do not get a feat from your background, you may select one of the following feats at level 1:
